Moon Supreme’s Wish

“Come on! Just make a wish, any wish!” Lina urged Qingcang, her voice full of excitement, her eyes sparkling in the dark.

Qingcang closed his eyes and deeply breathed to gather his thoughts and recall tonight’s wish. He thought back to the moment he made a wish before Lina had fallen asleep in his arms, gazing at the vibrant colors of the aurora borealis and the shooting stars streaking across the night sky. The memory was still fresh in his mind, and he could feel the weight of his wish heavy on his chest as he continued to have flashbacks, remembering his desire vividly, the words echoing in his mind:

‘I wish to open the portal back to my world, destroy the Fairy Realm, kill all the fairies, unite the three realms, bring back glory to the Moon Tribe, and most of all, be freed from being bound to her and be able to kill her before going back to my world,’ Qingcang wished, the weight of his desires heavy. He opened his eyes and saw Lina still praying in thought; her eyes closed, and a serene expression on her face. No matter how beautiful she and their experience was, he wanted to regain his freedom.

Although Lina did not ask Qingcang what he had wished for, he remembered it vividly as it had only been half an hour ago. He played the sentence she had told him after he had finished wishing over and over again in his head, her words still ringing in his ears:

“I wished for your happiness,” Lina had said softly, her voice filled with tenderness and sincerity.

Qingcang looked at Lina’s sleepy face from the corner of his eye, having mixed conflicting thoughts. On the one hand, he was surprised by her kind gesture. On the other hand, he knew that his wish was anything but selfless. He felt conflicted, torn between his desires for war and his confusion regarding her.

Qingcang held Lina close in his strong arms, wary not to disturb her peaceful slumber, and flew at a medium pace, careful not to drop her as he approached her home. The gentle breeze rustled her hair, and as he flew towards her house, he could not help but notice that the moonlight that illuminated her features made her look even more beautiful.

Qingcang carried Lina in his toned arms; his grip was gentle as he moved toward her room. He navigated the hallway with a slow, cautious step, mindful not to jostle her exhausted body. The tranquil sounds of his footsteps echoed in the silence of the night, the only noise accompanying them. He had always been aloof, never showing any expression, but tonight was different. His thoughts were consumed with conflicting desires: his wish for revenge and domination and her wish for his happiness. He knew he had to choose, but for now, he decided to stay with her, to watch over her as she slept peacefully.

As they entered the room, Qingcang gently placed Lina on the bed. He ensured that she was comfortable before turning around to sit on her chair.

Suddenly, Lina stirred and groaned, her eyes slowly opening. “We’re back,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, trembling with fear as she asked the question haunting her, “Am I going to die?”

Qingcang turned to look at Lina, his eyebrow raised and expression emotionless. He walked back to her bed and paused momentarily, dragging out an indifferent “Yes,” with cold eyes, watching her get frightened.

Lina’s eyes widened with terror as she heard Qingcang’s response, and her body shook with fear. “I don’t want to die.”

Qingcang scoffed at Lina’s whining and ran out of patience with her squeaking. He rolled his eyes and spoke calmly but firmly, “You won’t die with me here. If you die, it’ll only be because of your stupidity.”

Lina’s eyes widened in relief at Qingcang’s words. “Please don’t let them kill me.”

Qingcang looked at Lina with intensity in his eyes, his confidence unshakable. “No one dares to hurt you while I’m around,” he said. He picked up a blanket and threw it over her before saying, “I’ll find the culprit tomorrow at noon. Go to sleep.”

Lina nodded her head slowly, feeling reassured by Qingcang’s words. She closed her eyes and tried to relax, knowing that he would protect her from any harm that came her way, and she allowed herself to believe that he would keep her safe. “Even though you’re bad-tempered and sharp-tongued, you’re a good person,” she said softly as she slightly opened her eyes.

Qingcang’s response was unexpected. “No one is worse than me in the three realms,” he declared, his tone emotionless and matter-of-fact.

Lina scoffed at Qingcang’s words, unable to comprehend the gibberish he had spoken to her. “I don’t believe you.”

Qingcang raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in his eyes. “That’s because you don’t know me.”

“You strive to be the worst?”

“I’m already the worst. There’s no need to strive for it.” Qingcang’s voice was devoid of emotion. He sat on Lina’s comfortable gaming chair at her computer desk, seemingly lost in thought about important issues.

Lina watched Qingcang warily, her mind racing with questions. ‘What are you, a demon tyrant or something?’ she wondered. “If you are the worst in your world, then everyone there is a saint compared to here.”

Qingcang turned silent, not really familiar with Lina’s world, to respond to her sentence.

“Oh yeah, did you wish to go home during the meteor shower?”

Qingcang sighed, eyeing Lina from the chair. “One of my wishes was to return home.”

Lina’s droopy eyes widened slightly in surprise. “One of your wishes? What else did you wish for?”

“Stop asking about them.” Qingcang’s gaze pierced from a semi-dark corner.

Lina fell silent, sensing that she had overstepped her boundaries. “Fine, but do you still wish for all of them to come true?” she asked tentatively. ‘Do you still want to leave?’

Qingcang’s reply was smooth and effortless. “Yes, all of them.” His eyes were fixed on Lina. ‘Especially my wish about you.’

The ceiling lamp bathed the room in a warm glow. Lina was lost in her thoughts, and a pang of sadness crept into her heart. ‘He’s going to leave me. It’s best not to expect anything more from him. He’s not human, so I shouldn’t be selfish about it. He has every right to leave.’ She could feel a lump forming in her throat, tightening with emotion, making speaking difficult. “Let’s open the portal once I wake up in the morning.”

Qingcang appeared surprised by Lina’s suggestion, and he quickly realized that she could not perform the task. ‘She’s too weak to open the portal in this state. Her spiritual energy is drained from the black magic that left her.’

“Alright?”

Qingcang steadied his composure. “Let’s talk about this once you recover.”

Lina was left perplexed, unsure what to make of Qingcang’s response. ‘So, he doesn’t want to leave? Is the portal just an excuse?’ In an attempt to move forward, she declared, “Fine, I’ll just work on my own matters then.”

Lina remembered that she wanted to pray in worship to God before sleeping, thanking Him for helping her tonight through Qingcang because he would have remained asleep had God willed, and she would have died because of how tired Qingcang was.

~*~

At noon the next day, Qingcang was walking past Lina’s room when he heard an unusual sound emanating from it. He paused momentarily, trying to decipher the source of the noise, and it was not the sound of silence that he had come to expect from her during this time of day. He was stunned not to find her sleeping, as she was usually very lazy.

Qingcang hesitated before opening Lina’s door, but he turned the knob anyway, and the door creaked open. As he peered inside, he was shocked to see her listening to music and dancing to it in more revealing attire than he was accustomed to seeing her. Although it did not expose much skin, the clothing hugged her waist tightly, highlighting every curve of her body. In his world, everyone walked around in fully covered or loosely fitted garments that did not reveal much.

Qingcang stood there, silently observing Lina for a moment, trying to understand what he saw. He watched her face her ‘artifact’ called a smartphone and dance to some headache-causing sounds she considered music. ‘Silly Little Human…’ He was dumbfounded when he saw her move her mouth and synchronize her lips to the lyrics. ‘I thought I eliminated her black magic, but it appears that I have erased her sanity instead.’

Suddenly, Lina heard Qingcang clear his throat, and she instantly panicked, thinking he had caught her awkwardly. “Oh, hey! Y-You’re here.”

Qingcang crossed his arms over his chest. “What are you doing?”

“I’m dancing to the newest trending sound on TockTick. Everyone is doing it, so I hopped on the bandwagon to reach more people,” Lina responded playfully with a cheesy grin.

Half of what Lina said made no sense to Qingcang. As someone from a different world without any knowledge of ‘trending sounds’ or even smartphones, he looked at her as if she had lost her mind. Because to him, she acted strangely. “You told me that you’re an excellent strategist, but instead, this is what you do.”

Lina spoke casually with a hint of cheekiness, “Hmph. You know nothing about this world and the internet, so why should I explain myself?” She almost stuck out her tongue in retaliation against Qingcang for spoiling her fun moment.

Qingcang scoffed and turned his face away from her. “The wise don’t need to know about these subjects.”

Lina sighed deeply. “Never mind; it’s not as if you can understand even if I explain it.”

Qingcang narrowed his eyes, giving Lina an intense look as she appeared smug. He was not to be trifled with.

Lina then went to her bed and playfully threw herself on it to sit down, firmly stating, “Besides, Pretty Eyes, I may be a strategist, but I still have other hobbies.”

“Like what?” Qingcang still had his arms casually crossed over his chest. “Being an entertainer?”

Lina nodded. “Yes.” She was not going to back down and would make sure that he understood her point of view, forgetting the time he told her that he could not understand the heart and, thus, not understand any passion. She forgot that he only understood the logic behind subjects, and entertainment would fall under that statement as a waste of time.

Qingcang fell silent, pondering her statement. He was surprised that she had other interests besides being a strategist. Entertainment was his passion when he was a kid before he became the Moon Supreme and was forced to stop striving to become an entertainer. She reminded him of what he used to be and used to like.

“My followers watch me for my personality too; it’s not just for my skills.”

Qingcang raised an eyebrow, puzzled. “Followers?” He turned, curious to know more.

Lina nodded. “Uh-huh, that’s right.”

Qingcang approached Lina and gracefully sat on the other side of the bed, leaning forward a little. “How many?”

Lina leaned back against the headboard of her bed, playfully moving her legs at the edge of the bed. “I have over a million followers on my main channel, and more than twenty percent of them are die-hard regulars who return to see whatever I do daily on that page.”

Qingcang’s eyes widened barely, and his mouth parted slightly as he tried to process the staggering number. It was surreal for him as he tried to wrap his head around the idea. ‘Either there are too many humans in this world, or she is very good at what she does.’

Qingcang remembered the night Jianmin, Yichen’s wife, threatened Lina with her smartphone. Now he understood why she was so desperate to avoid scandals. To him, she was like a Moon Supreme in her world, trying to maintain her reputation and run her empire.

“So, this is why you wanted to marry me, yet keep the marriage a secret.” Qingcang regarded Lina with a newfound understanding. “Rumors will spread if they see a stranger in your house, but you only want to reveal that I’m your husband if someone finds out I’m living here someday.”

‘He figured me out. Clever.’ Lina blinked. “Yes, you’re right… But the other reason is that I’m religious. And I can’t afford any scandals; it would ruin everything I’ve worked so hard to build.”

Qingcang’s eyes narrowed as he studied Lina’s expression. He could tell that she was hiding something. “But why a secret marriage in the first place and not reveal to the world that I’m your husband from the start?”

Lina hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to answer. She knew she could not keep the truth from Qingcang forever, but could not bear telling him. ‘I thought I told him this before.’

“Is it still because of Yichen?” Qingcang cut through Lina’s thoughts. ‘She was so vague about this subject.’

Lina’s heart skipped a beat as she realized Qingcang had hit the nail on the head. She still had feelings for Yichen, but did not want to flaunt her soon-to-be husband. “Yes,” she whispered.

Qingcang turned his head away from Lina, lost in thought. “So, you still like him…” he said softly.

Lina gave a deep sigh, her mind clouded with emotions as she stood up from her bed. “You don’t understand, Pretty Eyes. Even though Yichen and I never dated, we’ve been through a lot together.”

Something sparked in Qingcang’s eyes, and he leaned forward, his eyebrows raised. “So, what stopped him from marrying you after all this time?”

‘I…’ her mind raced to find the right words as she met his gaze. “We come from different social hierarchies… He was raised in a billionaire family, and I’m just… well, I only got a little rich because of my work. We can’t be together; his parents will never allow it.”

As Lina spoke, she remained unaware that the wealthiest man in the three realms was already present, listening to her every word. Qingcang’s keen ears picked up on her soft voice and phrases, and he could not help but be intrigued.

Qingcang’s response was casual. “So what?” he challenged her in his usual deep voice.

Lina was dumbfounded, taken aback by Qingcang’s nonchalance. She sat back down on her bed and let out a brief sigh. “It’s not that simple. Marriage is not easy in this world. We only spoke secretly, never touched each other, never walked in public together, and kept a low profile. We didn’t see each other a lot, and we mostly talked on our phones when his parents weren’t around. The only time we appeared together was in videos, and even then, it was just an excuse for collaboration.”

Qingcang scoffed, his lips curling into a sneer as he turned his face away from Lina and looked down. “To me, it seems he had no guts. A weakling who was too afraid to stand up for himself.”

Lina’s eyes widened in surprise, feeling a twinge of anger. “What do you know? You’ve never been with someone before!”

“Neither have you.” Qingcang appeared to look at the floor. “From one secret to another.” Well aware that Lina wanted to keep their marriage a secret from society, just like Yichen had kept her hidden from his family.

The words cut her, stirring up old wounds and insecurities she thought she had buried. “You!” Her voice trembled. She blinked in disbelief at the arrogant man before her, who made her blood boil. “You know what? If one day, Yichen gets divorced and wants to marry me, I will NOT deny him! Even if you and I are married, I’ll instantly divorce you without a doubt! Now you get it?” she yelled before storming off.

Qingcang clenched his fists as he could not believe that Lina would be so bold as to threaten him like that and speak to him in such a manner.

“So, black magic was the cause of her losing feelings for Yichen. Now that it’s gone, she got her feelings back…” Qingcang murmured to himself as he tried to make sense of her words. He sighed deeply and whispered, “So, everything she told me last night was fake…” He scoffed, “Hmph. Thought so…” He continued to mutter under his breath, “Telling me that I’m the best in the world, wishing for my happiness, and being happy to see me…” He came to the conclusion to focus on his mission instead. ‘Nevermind. Why should I bother about the likes and dislikes of a mere human? I have more important things to do.’

Qingcang teleported away from that spot, remembering that it was noon, and he had to find the culprit who wanted her dead. He was determined to kill the offender and had a sneer on his face as he thought of the punishment he would deliver.

Lina collapsed to her knees, her head lowered in shame. “I think I went too far… I didn’t mean what I just said,” she whispered. “He kept bugging me about Yichen, but that’s no excuse. I should have kept my mouth shut…” She raised her head, and her eyes filled with tears as she realized the gravity of her words. “Oh, no… What have I done?” she muttered under her breath, the weight of her actions heavy on her heart.
